The Menomonee Falls Guardian was a tabloid that reprinted newspaper comic strips from USA and UK. The first issue was put out in June 28, 1973, with new issues coming out every week until February 23, 1976, when it became a monthly publication, running up to August 1976.

Unlike its sister publication, Menomonee Falls Gazette, this publication focused on reprinting humor strips, instead of adventure strips.

This publication is popular among comic strip collectors. Back issues are frequently put up for sale on eBay.

Scotland on Sunday

Type Sunday newspaper
Format Broadsheet

Owner Johnston Press
Editor Les Snowdon
Founded 1988
Political allegiance Broadly central
Headquarters 108 Holyrood Rd, Edinburgh

Website:

Scotland on Sunday is a Scottish Sunday newspaper, published in Edinburgh by The Scotsman Publications Ltd and consequently assuming the role of Sunday sister to its daily stablemate The Scotsman. It is printed in broadsheet format. Whilst technically being Scotland’s most right-leaning Scottish Sunday quality, a true diversity in its line makes it more akin to centrist politics; visible in the variety of the stances taken by columns within the Insight opinion section, as well as featuring contributions from arguably unlikely figures such as a former affiliate of the left-leaning ruling party, the SNP.

Scotland on Sunday was launched on 7 August 1988 and was priced at 40p.

Ultimate ownership of Scotland on Sunday has changed several times since the Sunday paper was launched nearly twenty years ago. The Scotsman publications, which also produces The Scotsman, Edinburgh Evening News and the Herald & Post series of free newspapers in Edinburgh, Fife, West Lothian and Perth, was bought by the Canadian millionaire Roy Thomson in 1953. In 1995, the group was sold to the billionaire Barclay Brothers for £85 million. They moved the group from its landmark Edinburgh office on North Bridge, which is now an upmarket hotel, to new offices on Holyrood Road, near where the Scottish Parliament Building was subsequently built. Then in December 2005 the paper, along with the other Scotsman Publications titles, was sold to Edinburgh based newspaper group Johnston Press in a £160 million deal.

Geoff Parker

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Professor Geoffrey Alan Parker FRS (born 24 May 1944) is a professor of biology at the University of Liverpool. He has a particular interest in behavioural ecology and evolutionary biology, and is most noted for introducing the concept of sperm competition in 1970, and his work in the 1970’s and subsequently, applying game theory (theory of games) to biology. With R. R. Baker and V. G. F. Smith in 1972, he proposed a leading theory for the evolution of anisogamy and two sexes, and in 1979 made the first theoretical analysis of sexual conflict in evolution. His work has also included the evolution of competitive mate searching, animal distributions, animal fighting, coercion, intrafamilial conflict, complex life cycles, and several other topics.

Parker was educated at Lymm Grammar School in Lymm, Cheshire, and gained his BSc from University of Bristol in 1965, from where he also gained a doctorate in 1969 under H.E. Hinton, FRS (1912 — 1977). His Ph.D. was on The reproductive behaviour and the nature of sexual selection in Scatophaga stercoraria L. (yellow dung fly), and provided a detailed quantitative test of Darwin’s theory of sexual selection, and an early application of optimality theory in biology.

At this time, most ethologists and ecologists interpreted adaptations in terms of “survival value to the species”". However, the paradigm shift of the gene-centric view of evolution (popularised by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene) shortly afterwards overturned this idea: mainstream views in behavioural ecology and sociobiology saw natural selection restored to Darwinian principles in terms of survival value to the individual (and its kin). Parker’s work played a part in this shift and in the early development of behavioural ecology.

He moved to the University of Liverpool in 1968, where he became a lecturer in zoology.

In 1978 he took a research fellowship at King’s College, Cambridge University, returning to Liverpool in 1979. He became a professor in 1989 on election to the Royal Society, In 1996 he became the Derby Chair of Zoology, where as of 2007, he remains.
